I have one GPU and the bottom slot with my PCIe X 4 SSD using all 4 lanes. Just wondering what other devices the OP has in his board/build. My brother has a Nividia Gigabyte G1 Gaming 4gb Edition GPU plugged into the top PCI-E slot on his motherboard. We tried plugging the adapter into the other PCI-E slot just bellow the GPU.

You can use any PCI-E card size in any PCI-E slot. You can indeed put an x16 card in an x1 slot, it will only run at x1 bandwidth, but it will work. Most slots have stoppers at the end, though, so it wouldn't "fit" without breaking that out. However, once you do, it'd be perfectly compatible.
